Sir Colin Lucas, Secretary of the Rhodes Trust and Warden of Rhodes House, Oxford University and former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, welcomed Oxford Round Table participants, presidents, vice-chancellors and professors of higher education gathered in Oxford to study and discuss issues affecting university leadership. Sir Colin gave insightful perspectives on critical aspects of management effectiveness in the oversight of large academic institutions. The meeting was led and facilitated by Dr. J. M. Irvine, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and former vice-chancellor of both the University of Birmingham and the University of Aberdeen. Dr. Irvine keynoted the session with a comprehensive analysis of the European higher education, titled "Towards a European Framework for Higher Education." Participants included top administrators and professors, from universities in 14 countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Georgia Republic, Germany, India, Nigeria, Oman, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States.
